X-Pro 2 Diary: Focussing on Small or Close Objects

X-Pro 2 Diary: Focussing on Small or Close Objects

In one of my earlier X-Pro 2 diary entries I pointed out an issue that I was having with the X-Pro 2 and using auto focus on small objects in a scene or objects close to the camera. The camera’s autofocus would refuse to lock on to smaller objects such as flowers and so on, and instead it would focus on the background. At the time, I wrote that it was probably something that I was doing wrong. Well, I’ve been trying a lot of things and I finally found the solution.

Before I get to the solution, I’ll quickly recap what I’d previously tired: On older X-series cameras such as the X-E1 or the X-Pro 1 there was a dedicated macro focusing mode and this always works for me previously for focussing on smaller details, however this is lacking in the X-Pro 2. Also, on other models that I’ve used, decreasing the size of the focus square would help, but neither of these options seemed to make any difference.

The setting that did fix the problem was to change the number of Autofocus pints from 77 to 273. You can find this in the AF/MF tab of the interface. Once I did this there no longer seemed to be an issue with using autofocus on smaller objects or objects close to the camera. I need to do a lot more testing to say that this 100% was the culprit and that it's completely solved, but so far it seems to have worked.
