Photo of the Day: Glendalough in Cinemascope

Glendalough Sunset

Here’s one from the archives. I had taken this a few years ago and I just came across it. It was actually cropped differently and I decided to try a cinemascope crop on the image and it looked much better than the original. It was taken at sunset in Glendalough, a national Park in Co. Wicklow (for those not familiar). To see it properly click on the image to view it larger!

Technical Details: Shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105mm Lens

Random Photo: Foggy Train Tracks

Foggy Train tracks with Nex-7

I was just going through some of my old projects in Aperture and I came across this image, and something struck me about it. I love the way the fog has muted the colours, but there is still some nice yellows and reds coming out. Ok, so I brought some of them up too, but still! I like it when you find something you had forgotten about and realise that you might not have given it a proper look the first time! Ok, it may not be the greatest shot in the world, but I like it, and, I do love trains, so anything remotely railway related will always appeal to me! I actually took this on my way to a completely un-photo related work meeting. I always have a camera in my bag, and it’s when you’re presented with a nice scene like this you’re glad. I could have taken the shot on my iPhone, but to be honest, I think it would have struggled with the light. The iPhone has a tendency to over expose, and there’s no real control.

This was taken with a Nex-7 and the always fantastic Sigma 30mm Lens. It was processed in Aperture. If you want to see the original, I posted it on my flickr account so you can compare!

Fallen

I am always fascinated by the change from Autumn to winter. There reaches a point where more leaves are on the ground than on the trees, and what was beautiful somehow becomes a grim reminder of the passage of time. So, on that cheery note…..

Autumn Colours in the Sunshine

There was finally a little break in the rain on Saturday so I had a chance to get out with my camera to capture some of the beautiful Autumn colours that can be seen around Dublin at the moment. Autumn is my favourite time of the year and I love capturing the spectacle of the Autumn foliage.

I took my 5DII with me and only brought my 50mm and 100mm macro lenses. I wanted to try and get some nice bokeh in the sun and I think I got some nice shots. The 5D captures bright sun really well, and seems to handle shooting into the sun quite well. I took the Luas (tram) into the city centre and started my impromptu photowalk around the canal area. The canal which was still pretty green only a few weeks ago is now pretty much all golden, but it is pretty beautiful to look at. It was a beautiful day too, although it was cold.

I love how this shot (above) came out. It’s a great contrast and some lovely bokeh. And this was with a super cheap 50mm 1.8 lens

I love the colours on this shot (above). The rich reds are beautiful.

I took this shot with my Canon Macro lens which is probably the single sharpest lens I own.

I love when you find a little shaft of light like this just illuminating a small little section of a scene.

It’s always good to end with a little lens flare!

If you like these you can see the full set here on my Image Library. I have some more Autumn images from around the place so I’ll have some more posts soon.

Random Acts of Photography – Miserable Day Edition

It’s one of those days that it’s so dark and gloomy that it’s actually quite moody. So here are a few quick shots I took on my X100 while out for a little walk earlier. I was trying out the VSCO film presets from visualsupply company that everyone keeps raving about. I have to say they do a good job of emulating film, but I’m not sure if you should be constantly looking to the past all the time. Sure it has a nice look, but so do the files straight form the camera anyway. Anyway, it’s an interesting little experiment, and here are the results….

Evening Ferry Docking in Oslo

I was in Oslo, Norway last week and got some great photos while I was there. There is some really amazing light this time of year in Norway, and the city itself is a beautiful place. I’ll have lots to share over the next little while, but there’s one sequence that really captured the “edge of the world” feel to the place and it was this sequence of a ferry coming in to dock one evening. It was about ten to five in the afternoon and the while the sun was going down, but it was still at least an hour away from sunset, yet the light was beautiful. These might appear a little dark in your browser, but I didn’t want to detract from the moody nature by brightening them up too much. Anyway, enjoy, and there’s more to come!
