Video: How to do skin smoothing in Capture One without using plug-ins
One of the topics I see coming up frequently on various forums and from my own readers is how to do skin softening in Capture One. In this video I show you some techniques for achieving a natural looking skin smoothing technique, and I also talk about some masking tricks and how to control the effect using layer options.
When Adobe added the texture control to Lightroom, and suggested that negative texture could be used for skin softening, some people assumed that because you don’t have this in Capture One, you can’t do skin softening, but it’s actually pretty straightforward. In essence you use some negative clarity and negative structure on a masked layer. You can control the overall effect with the layer opacity, and if you find that you’re losing too much definition you can use the luminance masking options to bring back in some details.
I don’t really shoot many portraits myself, so for this video I used some images from Unsplash. They were from Hassan Khan and Taylor Hernandez.
If you don’t have Capture One, you can download a trial version here, or learn more about the available options here. If you’re looking for some high quality black and white and colour film like style packs for Capture One check out my collections on Gumroad.
