Capture One 15.2 Released. Adds new Auto Perspective Tool & Other features
Capture One has just released a new version of the software with some new features, bug fixes and improvements. This release brings Capture One to 15.2. The big new feature is an AI-based auto-perspective-correction tool, similar to Lightroom’s “Upright” feature. Also included, is an improved auto-straighten tool.
“Improved” Auto-Rotate
Before I talk about the perspective tool, let me talk about the AI rotate tool. I have previously talked about how bad this is, and I had hoped that they would acknowledge the shortcomings of it, and improve it. I only released a video yesterday where I talked about it. So, as you can imagine, I was excited when I saw it on the list of “improvements” for this release. Unfortunately, it’s still comically bad. Below is a screenshot of the results from the “improved” auto-straighten.
It doesn’t work for almost all images I’ve tried where there is a clearly visible horizon. And they specifically mention this in the release notes that it’s improved for these kinds of images, but in my testing it still has major issues. It has better luck on images where the horizon isn’t clear, or for more close-up details, like buildings, or city scapes. There are some improvements in some images, but for others it’s still way off. It still feels like a beta feature.
Auto Keystone Correction
Anyway, with that little rant out of the way ….
As you can imagine, I was sceptical about the auto keystone, or auto-perspective function, given how bad the auto-rotate is, but it seems to work reasonably well. I haven’t tested a huge number of photos with it, but it’s worked with everything I’ve tried. It’s quick too. I'm impressed with what I'm seeing so far.
One thing to not about this - it only does vertical correction for now - it doesn’t do a full vertical and horizontal correction, however it does rotate the image when needed too. For the most part it works, but sometimes you will see the lack of horizontal correction.
Speed Increase for M1 Macs
Also listed in the release notes are speed improvements for M1 Macs. Here’s what they say:
Owners of Apple M1 machines will see huge improvements to the speed of their workflow after updating to the latest version of Capture One Pro. Preview generation, Luma Mask rendering, and Feather and Refine Masks now load faster than ever. If you are the owner of a Fujifilm camera with a X-Trans sensor, you will also notice up to 100% faster loading of your images.
To be honest, I haven’t noticed any major differences, but it wasn’t slow for me to begin with, and I haven’t tried importing lots of new images to test preview generation.
Other New Features
Some other new features listed include:
- More intuitive crop aspect ratio:
- Get easier access to your favourite tools in drop-down Menu
- Customise your sorting
- Share your images for longer with 14-day sessions in Capture One Live
