PhotoBlogging: The importance of regular posting

There's lots of advice out there about blogging, and how to grow your traffic. Much of it often seems very academic or even has the feeling that, if you follow it, it would look like you're trying to spam your readership. Even so, if you're running a blog there are things that are important to do to maintain and grow your readership. As someone who has been blogging for a long time now, I thought I'd share my personal experience of one of the most important things you can do, and that's to keep posting regularly.

Squarespace tip: Increase the space between images in a stacked gallery

Here’s a quick tip for fellow Squarespace users. If you use the stacked gallery block often, one of the things that you may find frustrating about it is the fact that there are no options for increasing the space between images in the gallery. That, and the fact that there’s no Lightbox option. I’ve covered a workaround for the second issue before, but there’s actually a relatively easy way to increase the space between items in a stacked gallery.

The Tools I use for Photoblogging

I'm starting a new section here on the blog dedicated to photoblogging. I've been writing and blogging about photography for many years now, and before that I used to blog about Apple and technology in general. My workflow and style of blogging has changed many times over the years, as has the software and web services that I use. In this article, I'm going to discuss some of the current  tools that I make use of when photoblogging.

Trying out Medium

I'm always trying out new blogging and social platforms to see if they're worth using, especially for photographers. Lately, the one that is getting the most attention seems to be Medium, and so I thought I would try it out too. I wanted to try it both for myself, and for an experiment to see how it would work as a photo blogging platform. so I could write about it for my fellow photographers.

Adding Alt Text to Images in Squarespace

If you're running a photoblog or photography website, then you're probably already aware of the importance of properly adding descriptive text to your images. If you want to help improve how well your images and your blog is found on search engines, then properly adding alt text can make a big difference. However, if like me, you're using Squarespace as your blogging platform, then it might not be immediately obvious as to how you add this text to images. In this short post, I'll show you how to add alt text for both single image blocks and gallery blocks.

Creating a "Stacked" style gallery in Squarespace that can use the Lightbox

This is a quick tip for any fellow Squarespace users out there. If you're a photo blogger and you use Squarespace you may have come across the following problem: You want to add a series of images to your blog post and you want them all to appear in a row, one after the other. The simplest way to do this is to add a gallery block to your post, and use the stacked mode for the gallery. This will add any images in the gallery one after the other in a "stacked" fashion, but for some reason known only to the folks at Squarespace, this method doesn't allow you to use the Lightbox functionality (so that when you click on an image it will apear large in an overlay)
