Capture One Nikon Announced - Available Now!

Capture One Nikon Announced - Available Now!

Capture One Nikon has hust been announced. This is a new version of Capture One specifically for Nikon users. Just like the versions available for Sony and Fujifilm users, the new Capture One Pro Nikon version will have all the features of the full version, but will be at a reduced price, and will only open Nikon RAW files. This release will also bring tailored profiles for selected Nikon cameras to Capture One.

About the new Capture One Pro Nikon Version

From the press release:

Unlike other RAW processors, Capture One’s camera profiles are uniquely developed for each specific camera model, a process that requires the use of the camera in and out of a controlled lab in Copenhagen, where a team of specialists engage each new model in various scenarios. They then evaluate all the performance parameters such as color, sharpness, and noise across hundreds of images and uses that data to deliver a truly tailored profile, which ultimately provides the best post-processing experience. Capture One for Nikon, like the Pro version, brings this level of support for Nikon cameras, including their latest cameras like the Z6, Z7, and D6.

The company is also proud to begin this journey with Nikon users with one of the photography world’s most beloved people, Joe McNally.

“Working with Capture One means I have a complete solution, from tethering and file management on location, to creative control over how the drama, impact and color of the picture at hand matches up with my imagination,” says Joe McNally, Nikon ambassador. “It’s a complete tool and with the new features, it’s getting simpler and more seamless than ever to use.”

Incidentally, they announced on their Facebook page a little while ago that Joe McNally is the company’s newest ambassador. I’m a huge fan of Joe’s and I’ve been following him for years. This is a great coup on the part of Capture One. Joe is such a great photographer, and a great teacher too. I’m nearly more excited about that than anything else!

The new Nikon version will also be based on the just released 20.1 update. This new version includes a number of new improvements, including a completely revised clone and heal tools, a new before and after tool, a new Lightroom importer and some changes to the interface. I have full details about this release here.

Should I get Capture One for Nikon or Full version of Capture One Pro?

If you’re wondering which version should you get, it all depends on whether you shoot with more than one camera or not. The new Nikon version of Capture One pro will only open Nikon files raw files, whereas the full version will open Raw files from any Camera. The Nikon version is cheaper because of this. That is the only limitation though. Other than that, the versions are the same. The new profiles will also be in the full version.

So if you shoot with only Nikon cameras, and don’t plan on getting any other brand of camera, then you can safely get Capture One pro Nikon. This will save you a bit over buying the full version.

However, if you do use more than one brand of camera, then you should get the full version. There are no special features in the Nikon version by the way, other than being limited to Nikon cameras. This is a common misconception I hear from readers about the Fuji and Sony versions. The only real difference is the full version can use any camera, but the brand specific ones can only use ones form those specific cameras.

Version Price (perpetual) Features
Capture One Pro $299 Can open Raw files from any camera.
Choose this version f you use multiple cameras from multiple manufacturers.
Capture One Pro Nikon $129 Can only open Nikon Raw files.
Choose this version if you only ever want to open Nikon RAW files.
Capture One Pro Sony $129 Can only open Sony Raw files.
Choose this version if you only ever want to open Sony RAW files.
Capture One Pro Fujifilm $129 Can only open Fujifilm Raw files.
Choose this version if you only ever want to open Sony Fujifilm files.
