Capture One Price Increase

Capture One Price Increase

I must admit to only half following this news over the past few days, being somewhat preoccupied with real-world events. Anyway, the other day Capture One announced that they were putting the prices up for some versions of Capture One, notably the Nikon, Fujifilm and Sony versions, and upgrades for the Pro Version. In addition, they are putting the number of seats with the Nikon/Sony/Fujifilm versions to two.

When I first read this I was a bit confused, which is partly why I’m late getting to this story. Basically here’s the new pricing for affected versions (i.e. the changes) from Jan 11th:

Product Payment type USD EUR GBP
Capture One For Fujifilm / Nikon / Sony New perpetual license USD 199 EUR 229 GBP 199
Perpetual upgrade from version 20 USD 149 EUR 169 GBP 149
Perpetual upgrade from older version USD 149 EUR 169 GBP 149
Annual prepaid subscription USD 149 EUR 169 GBP 149
Monthly (month to month) subscription USD 19 EUR 23 GBP 19
Annual monthly subscription USD 14 EUR 18 GBP 14
Capture One Pro Capture One Pro Perpetual upgrade from version 20 USD 199 EUR 209 GBP 199

This comes into effect tomorrow, January 11th (at the time of writing this) so there’s not much time left to get an upgrade before the price increase (again, sorry, I’m late with this).

You can find out more on the store.

I’m sure lots of people are quite disappointed (and by disapointed, I mean angry) with this, and that’s perfectly understandable. I’m guessing that Capture One, like many companies, has struggled with the pandemic, and it’s probably messed up a lot of their plans after becoming independent from Phase One. There’s also some confusion as to the state of the free express version. It’s still buried on their site, but all of the main links to it are gone, and I can’t find any info as to whether or not it was updated to 21 (I’m pretty sure it hasn’t)

They could also have handled this a bit better from a PR standpoint, and I know that supporters and people who write and are fans of Capture One like myself will be left bearing the brunt of the backlash. It doesn’t fill people with confidence, especially after the Capture One 21 upgrade was so poorly received. Anyway, I can understand this being a difficult market and the situation being difficult for companies, but it’s difficult for users too, so it’s probably not going to play that well with consumers.

To be honest, I think that their big issue is that its still too complicated. They really need to simplify their pricing and product structure completely, and probably just get rid of the manufacturer versions altgether, and just have a perpetual option and a subscription option, and then lower the overall price. But that's just my opinion.

Incedentally, on the plus side, they've let us know that support for the Nikon Z6II and Z7II is due very soon in a forthcoming service update.

By the way - I'm just a messanger here, so please remeber that in the comments. - i.e. don't shoot the messanger
