Adobe has just rolled out the latest version of Lightroom, introducing an exciting new AI-powered feature: Landscape Masking. This addition promises to revolutionize how photographers and editors work with landscape images by allowing not only the selection of entire landscapes but also individual elements within them. In this post, I’ll share my hands-on experience with this new tool, highlighting its strengths, quirks, and potential.
I’ve finally done it! My first new set of Lightroom presets in nearly five years are now available. As I mentioned in a couple of previous posts, this took a lot of work to get out the door, mainly because I haven’t done one of these sets in so long, but I’m pretty happy with the results, and I hope you will be too!
Adobe has just announced its June photography updates, and this includes new versions of all versions of Lightroom as well as Photoshop and Camera Raw. In this article, I’m only going to be focusing on Lightroom Classic, which is now at version 11.4. This release actually has quite a few new and improved features for a point release, and I’ll outline the key new features in the post (and video) below.
Today, Nikon announced their new retro styled camera, the Nikon Zfc, which wasn’t much of a surprise as it had been rumoured for weeks now, and pictures of it had been leaked for the last little while. I don’t know what it is about camera companies these days, but they can’t seem to keep any product much of a secret before its launch. Even so, it’s nice to see the official details, and for the reactions from the lucky people (who are important enough) to get their hands on it. I have to say, I really like what Nikon has done here, and I would absolutely consider putting this on my shopping list.
DXO labs today announced the release of a brand new Application called “Pure Raw”. So what is “Pure Raw”? It is a RAW pre-processing application that uses the DXO engine to convert your raw files into DNGs using DXO’s demosiacing and lens correction technology, and more importantly their highly regarded Deep Prime AI based noise reduction. This results in a file that can still be edited much like a RAW file, keeping the ability to change white balance, recover highlights and so on, while taking advantage of DXOs imaging technology.

It’s not a complete manual for Capture One, and while you don’t need to be an advanced user, you need to know the basics.
Last week Canon released a new version of its entry level DSLR (Previously the Eos 200D in Europe) and for the most part it flew under the radar, with the exception of the obligatory round of Canon bashing from the usual suspects. The thing is though, it’s actually a pretty capable little camera for the price, and if you’re starting out, especially if you want to get into Vlogging, it’s worth considering.
I’ve been a fan of Luminar ever since it first came out. The reason is that I like it so much is because it is a powerful piece of software and it doesn’t try to be like anything else. It’s not trying to be a Lightroom clone. It has a lot of unique features, and I find editing with it to be a fun and artistic way of working. But it’s always had a few limitations, and the biggest of which has been the fact that it has been a single image at a time editor. That’s about to change.
Last week Phase One released the latest big update to Capture One, bringing it to version 12, and it is a significant change over previous versions. The interface has been completely revamped, and the company has added a good few new tools and features. For Fujifilm shooters, the software now supports Fuji’s film simulation profiles.
A few weeks ago when I launched Alpine for Lightroom, a few people wrote to me asking for a Capture One version. After some work and experimentation, I’m happy to announce that I now have a version of Alpine for Capture One. So what is Alpine? In a nutshell, Alpine for Capture One is a set of “Styles” that is designed to give your RAW images a stylised look. The idea for Alpine was to work with images of forests and mountains, to give the “woodsman” style of effect that is popular certain outdoor magazines.

In fact, I was so confused by the changes, I mistook one aspect of the new format completely wrong, and ended up putting out some incorrect information. When Capture One was recently updated to 10.1 they made some significant changes to the way X-Trans files are supported. I have been in a bit of a quandary as to what to do about my Capture One X-Trans guide. I originally wrote this quite some time ago now, and it was several versions ago. I have kept updating it, but it was getting a bit messy. I am planning to do a completely new version, for just 10.1, and structuring the guide differently. However, I didn’t want to leave existing readers hanging either. With that in mind I’ve created a supplement for 10.1 and it is included free with the existing guide.

I came up with the style when working on trying to copy the look of some film that a friend had asked me to scan, and I’m pretty happy with the results. T-PAN is an attempt to create a realistic set of monochrome film presets, and it is aiming to re-create the experience of shooting with a professional grade black and white film.
The headline feature in the latest version of Lightroom CC is the new guided upright feature. This new tool lets you set guidelines when using the "Upright" automatic correction feature. Rather than spend a long time talking about it, I made a quick video to show you the feature in action.
