DXO Photo Lab 5.2 Released - Important notes for Fuji and Apple Silicon Users
DXO quietly released the latest update to DXO Photo Lab sometime recently. I don’t know when exactly this was as there was no press release or anything and I wasn’t really paying that much attention to the software update notices, but it’s actually an important release for two reasons. It brings improvements to Fuji support and improves the way Fuji cameras are handled in an important way. It also makes us aware of a bug in the latest MacOS and offers a work around. Read on for more details
Fuji X-Trans Improvements
According to the release notes:
After introducing X-Trans compatibility in PhotoLab 5.0, version 5.2 now brings Fujifilm Film Simulation compatibility within the color rendering palette. It is also possible to automatically apply the camera body rendering to Fuji RAW images using a new option in the preferences panel. From what I understand from this, you no longer need to have DXO Film Pack installed to get access to the Fujifilm Film Simulation modes (I’m trying to verify this). You can also now quickly select the profile that was used when shooting with the camera, and also, have this applied automatically.
Note that For Fujifilm X-Trans RAW files, only HQ and DeepPRIME denoising options are available; PRIME is not. You should always use DeepPRIME with X-Trans files in my opinion as it also improves the demosiacing and it’s not great without it.
M1 Bug and Workaround
With the latest version of Apple’s Monterey 12 (macOS v12.3) Apple introduced a bug which slows down considerably the Apple Neural Engine cores used in all M1 Macs. This affects only Fujifilm X-Trans RAW files in DxO PhotoLab 5 and DxO PureRaw 2. The bug has been reported to Apple, but while waiting for a fix, there is a workaround to let you continue using DeepPRIME with great speed: go to the preferences and under “Advanced/DeepPRIME acceleration”, manually choose your M1 GPU instead of the Apple Neural Engine.
Other New Features
- Metadata Conflict Resolution: DxO PhotoLab version 5.2 introduces new conflict metadata resolution. When "metadata synchronization" is not activated in the Preferences panel, and a user modifies or updates image metadata in a third-party application, PhotoLab will display an icon on those specific images that indicates a conflict with its database. A new dialog box allows users to resolve the conflict by choosing between “Write to image” (use data from the database) or “read from image” (accept the changes from the image XMP).
- New Custom Crop Ratios: DxO PhotoLab 5.2 improves the ability to create custom crop ratios in the crop palette.
- Editing fields (IPTC) are now more easily seen.
- The camera-matching color rendering is now displayed by default in the color rendering palette (when available).

- Fixed an issue that prevented opening large TIFF files

If you already have DXO Photo Lab the update should be available now within the software. Just choose the option to check for updates from the menu. (It should come up as an option when you launch).
