Capture One Addresses Service Outage
Last week Capture One suffered a service outage that affected users of the companies software. The issue was caused by Capture One’s payment provider, Fast Spring, and it caused the software to temporarily stop working for some users. Needless to say, people affected by this weren’t happy.
In my “Capture One Wish List” post from last week, I talked about this and wrote:
If you are selling your product as a high-end tool for professionals, a problem with a partner’s internet service shouldn’t take down a standalone application for an extended period. It’s just not acceptable in the professional space.
Luckily, Capture One seems to have realised the seriousness of this, and yesterday they addressed it in a Tweet:
Following last week’s issues with our payment solution provider FastSpring, we have now developed a solution that will decouple our applications and services from them when needed to avoid such incidents in the future. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

While this is fairly vague, hopefully it will prevent this from ever happening again. One of the fears that people have always had about subscription services, ever since Adobe announced it was switching to subscription, is that an internet outage will prevent the application from working, but Adobe’s software will keep working for a period, regardless. I’m sure that this was a fluke incident on Capture One’s behalf, but it’s good to see them addressing it all the same. I still prefer the old activation method though.
