New Video: Photo Walk by Dublin's Grand Canal and Using Photography to Overcome Creative Block

n this video, I go back to basics and set out to enjoy the creative process of taking photos in order to overcome a bad case of creator block and imposter syndrome. I went for a Photo Walk by the grand canal in Dublin with my Trusty Fujifilm X-E4 and talked about how you sometimes need to take photos just for yourself and enjoy the process as a form of meditation.

It’s been a while since. I’ve done one of these vlog style videos. Part of the reason, is that, as mentioned in the video, I’ve been suffering from a bad case of creator block and imposter syndrome. I have been overly hard on myself, and I’ve been so critical of myself that I’ve found it hard to make videos and even go out to take photography. This is something that affects many creators occasionally, but this is the worst feeling of this phenomenon that I’ve felt for a long time.

As an attempt to remedy this, I’ve tried to spend more time taking photos just for me. I find that by getting back to basics, and just taking photos to enjoy the process and not worry whether others will like them or not, I’ve been able to slowly re-engage the creative side of my brain. While it’s going to be an ongoing process, it’s a start.

In the video, I go to take photos in one of my favourite spots, which is a stretch of the Grand canal in the centre of Dublin City. As it was the beginning of autumn when I shot this, the light was starting to take in its Autumn golden hue, and I was lucky with a nice morning for shooting. Below is a section of images from the shoot.

I’m really trying to get back into shooting and creating more. There have been many reasons for my lack of progress lately, including those mentioned in the video. One of the advantages of things having been let go for so long is that there are no longer any real expectations in my head, and now I can build back up, doing what I want to do, and not what I think the audience might expect. So hopefully, this will be the start of a new turning point for me.
