Some Resources To Learn Capture One

Some Resources To Learn Capture One

If there’s one issue I hear over and over again about Capture One is that its hard to learn. I actually don’t think that its a difficult application to use, but a big part of the problem is the difficulty people have in finding proper learning material. So, in this post, I’m going to do my best to point you in the right direction. I will also keep updating this as I find more valuable resources.

The best course on Capture One

If you’re learning Capture One from the start, without having ever used it before, I highly recommend this course from Derrick Story on LinkedIn Learning - formerly Lynda.com. It’s only recently been updated for version 20. For a while I struggled with the software too until I watched this course (an older version). In particular, he explains the organisation and library side very well, which is something I know a lot of readers struggle with.

I have no affiliation with this by the way, I just think its really good and worth it. You do need to subscribe but I'm pretty sure there's a trial available.

Capture One’s own learning resources

Capture One itself has some good learning resources, but they’re a bit spread out all over the place. In particular though, they have quite a good YouTube channel and they regularly post videos of edit sessions, and they go into quite a good bit of detail. You can find these, wither on YouTubeor on their Learning Hub.

If you’re starting out, there is a good webinar they did on Capture One 20 that walks you through the basics.

I think this is channel may often be overlooked by new users, but it has a lot of really good videos on there. Even watching some of the live editing webinars you will find some god and useful information.

My Youtube Channel & Capture One Playlist

I’ve done quite a few videos myself on Capture One on YouTube and you can find these on my Capture One playlist. My videos are probably a little more advanced, and perhaps not ideal for the absolute beginner, but I do try and cover things from a different perspective. I’ve embedded a few of the more poplar ones below.

Alex on Raw Free Guide

A few users have pointed me to this, but I haven’t checked it out myself, but Alex On Raw has a free downloadable guide for getting started with Capture One. It’s for version 12, but it’s free!

Things to be wary of

There are a few other places where you might go to get information on Capture One, and you should be a little wary of some of these. There are a few Capture One facebook groups, and I monitor a few of these, but some of them can be quite toxic. People ask a question about something, and then a Buch of responders either use it as a way to bash capture one, or attack the user for being stupid or something similar. They do offer good advice too, but they’re not particularly well moderated, and while you can find some good information here, there’s a lot of misinformation here too. So, I’m not saying avoid these completely, just to be careful.

Help me make this a good resource

So there’s only a few things here right now, but if you know of any good resources, please let me know in the comments below, so I can grow this, and I will turn it from a blog post into a full easily accessible page.

Try or Buy Capture One

If you don’t already have Capture One, you can download a 30 day trial now from the company’s website. If you do go to buy it, Capture One Pro is available in both subscription and perpetual licences available, in versions for all cameras, Fuji specific or Sony specific. The Fuji and Sony versions only open raw files from cameras of the respective manufacturers, but other than that, they are identical to the full version. There is also a cut down “express” version for Sony and Fuji Shooters, but this has limited features compared to the full “Pro” version.
